Three days after our original trip to the Natural History Museum we headed back up.
Why?
Well, a couple of little animals from the museum's gift shop somehow made it home with us.
So we had to take a teaching moment and remedy that.
Once that was over, we had fun.
We had only seen half the museum the previous trip, so this time we went to see the live butterflies and insects.
Mason was a little aprehensive about all those butterflies flying around her head, so she spent most of her time inside sitting on the floor.
The funny part was that the butterflies kept landing on her hair, but they'd be gone again before I could get a picture.
Cayden loved having the guide and telling us the names of the ones he had found.
The 'butterfly lady', as Lillian called her, helped Lillian hold out her finger so one could rest on it. Otherwise, you weren't supposed to touch them at all.
Ashton liked how they sucked the flower nectar, and fruit juice to eat.

I loved these two blue ones, but I couldn't get a decent pictures. They just kept chasing each other all over. It was fun to watch. The lady told us that these butterflies are native to Puerto Rico, and the ladies down there would use the blue on them as eye makeup.
Then we headed on to the bugs.
Ashton and Lillian were much braver than me. They were really interested in the Madagascar Hissing Cockroach and wanted to touch him and let him climb on them.
YUCK.
Lillian was also interested in this GINORMOUS grass hopper.
After the insects we had a little bit more time and went through the sections on Early Virginia and the Anthropology. They were pretty interesting to look at and read through, but didn't make for good pictures.
And that was our day. We had two hours at the parking meter, so we had to rush out and head back.
Out of all the Smithsonian Museums that we've been to, my kids liked this one the best. We've even been back to the Air and Space Museum (for the 3rd time), and this one still trumps that.
