While visiting in Nauvoo, we drove to Carthage to see the jail where the Prophet Joseph Smith was held and martyred.
I thought this was such a good opportunity to see so many of the places that we've heard about from our church history. It definitely helped to be able to visualize the places and events from that time.
Most of the historical sites in Nauvoo and at Carthage are run by LDS missionaries; either sister missionaries, or couples. We were able to tour the jail with one sister missionary.
She gave us a timeline of the time the Prophet spent in the jail, and how the events leading to his martyrdom unfolded. I don't think I had an accurate understanding before of how everything happened.
The jail was a home that a family lived in. Part of the home was a jail cell, and Joseph and the other men spent some time in it. The jailor felt sympathy for them after a little while, and allowed them use of some of the family bedrooms.
This is the room where they were when the mob came, and the window Joseph was shot and killed through.
Some of the mob entered the house, and shot through the door to the bedroom.
Amazing that after 150+ years they still have the actual door with bullet holes.

All the kids, even admidst their playing, learned and were touched by the Spirit as we were there, learning about the Prophet.
